This article is about the Oculus. You may be looking for the Peeper.

The Oculus is a small, passive fauna species only found in the Jellyshroom Cave. It is catchable and edible, raw, cooked or cured. At 630 energy in the Bioreactor and one inventory slot, the Oculus has the best energy to size ratio of any item in the game.

Appearance[]

The Oculus is a small, turquoise colored fish with purple on its back that looks very similar in appearance to the Peeper, although around twice the size.

It has two large bioluminescent magenta eyes, with each featuring very detailed irises, and appears to have no visible mouth.

The Oculus has two tube-like organs that extend from its body to the top and the bottom of its head, which resemble backward-facing jets pushing it forward, much like how a Peeper maneuvers in the water. Its body ends with five swaying stalks for a tail, each having multiple purple stripes and resembling tentacles.

Also, the Oculus does not have a beak, unlike a Peeper.

A pair of Oculus can be found in one of the caves in the Aquarium in the Primary Containment Facility.

Behavior[]

The Oculus is fairly agile and tends to form small shoals patrolling the Jelly Shroom Caves' vicinity while constantly producing faint but audible clicking sounds. It seems to be afraid of light, as any light source directly pointed at it will make it flee.

The Oculus will flee from the player much slower than its relative, therefore making it easier to catch.

Occulus

This specimen shares genetic similarities with the common peeper. While the shallows and the cave systems are separated by just a few meters of rock, foodstuffs and threats in each biome are completely different. It is possible a small school of peepers was once cut off in the caves, and the oculus species is how they adapted.

1. Highly Developed Night-vision:
Large, complex eyeballs provide this herbivore superior vision in the dark, and an intense phobia of light.

2. Lack of Beak:
While the peeper uses its beak to break down tough corals, the oculus likely feeds on the soft fungal growths of the jellyshroom caves and thus has no need of one.

3. Separated Tail Fin:
The caves in which the oculus lives make it hard to escape from fast predators. The oculus has adapted by splitting its tail fin into five separate tendrils. These tendrils prevent it from swimming as fast as its shallow-water cousin, but each can be detached and regrown, enabling it to escape more easily when caught.

Assessment: Edible

  • One of the fauna sheets show that Oculus were originally going to spawn in the Grand Reef, as shown in this fauna chart, near the bottom left.
